Server Status, Network News and More Information

If you are at all curious about server and network maintenance windows, service issues, software updates, or anything of the sort, you can check out the TechAlert blog, located on the Production server. I also use this site as my “production” blog post, as Drupal is a lot more flexible than WordPress and this is more of a test/hosting site anyhow.

Feel free to hit me with any questions.

Ten Years Later, and Still (Kinda) Kickin’

Wow, nearly ten years have gone by since the last post on this decrepit website. All that fanfare about the Dev server sticking around, and here it sits with its websites largely unloved. Such a depressing way to live, eh?

This server used to be a thriving playground home to all sorts of great projects of varying complexity. Nowadays, it sits the corner in a teeny tiny little host, humming along while minding its own business while occasionally getting fed various software updates. Merely a shadow of its former self, for lack of a better turn of phrase. Never mind you, this server doesn’t go hungry, as it gets fed fresh software updates on a regular basis, it just doesn’t quite get the exercise it used to get.

Local compute and storage capacity have both greatly increased since this server was initially given its means; however, this growth has also allowed for new projects to be spun and piloted on their own, thus further diminishing a need for an aggregate ‘Dev’ server (traditionally, don’t put all your eggs in one basket, right?). Granted, there are still some software projects that this little guy plays with as mentioned before, but they don’t quite play the same role as tech and needs have both marched on.

So what will come of this little server? Status quo, probably. Admittedly, as one of the only Ubuntu servers in the environment, it will likely still remain a pilot system for any updates and changes that are set to go in place for the “partner” system. In addition to this, it’ll likely also serve as a little playground for any close comrades that might want or need it.

So is everyone up for another ten years of status quo? Most likely. Will this little server still be kicking after those ten years to revel in (what could be) the melancholy? Only time will tell.

Dev Server Back Online Until Further Notice

A previous post (seen below) that was made a while ago, indicated that the Dev server (this server) was only going to be back online temporarily to allow for TeamSpeak testing. While the TeamSpeak testing has been completed (and the project relatively abandoned because of a bug in the daemon causing unexplained spikes in resource usage with no resolution from the vendor), the server has remained online.

Why, you ask?

The Dev server is now running an extended pilot for a Jabber-based chat service, and is expected to remain online beyond the end of the pilot. The Dev server is also being used as a testing environment for new versions of system software and web apps (such as WordPress) to allow any glitches to be sorted out before pushing the updates to production servers, in order to avoid extended downtime.

TL;DR: The Dev server is here to stay for a while. Yay!

Dev Server Temporarily Back Online

The Dev server (this server) has been temporarily brought back online to provide a testing environment for the possible future deployment of a TeamSpeak 3 VoIP server. The ultimate goal is to have a production installation ready to go at the beginning of next year, but only time (and testing) will tell if that goal will be met. Hit the thread on the production site for more information.

WordPress

I hate WordPress. It’s been a nightmare to set up, and I can’t even access it internally with my own internal server names and such and still have it work from the outside. I essentially have to go out and back in to get to the site from the machine that’s sitting right here on my desk, connected to the same network as the server.

Anyhow, if you would like an account on this server, feel free to ask and I’ll see what I can dish up.
